PDOA Awards 2012 Comeback Kid Award

 Callie Mills 2013 med

Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates recently selected Callie Mills as the recipient for the fourth annual “Comeback Kid” Scholarship. The scholarship was created for an athlete who has overcome a serious sports injury and has exemplified perseverance, a positive attitude, and a willingness to return to the game. The recipient must also have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and have a willingness to reach out to other athletes about prevention of injuries. The scholarship is intended for further education, and is given in the fall of each year.

Callie is a junior at West Florence High School, and plays for the varsity girls’ soccer team. She also plays for the South Carolina United Football Club 95’ Girls Elite team, and the South Carolina 1996 Girls Olympic Development Team.

In March of 2011, while playing in a high school soccer match against Sumter High School, Callie suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a lateral meniscus tear. Dr. Patrick Denton successfully operated on Callie in April of 2011. Shortly after the surgery, Callie began a seven month period of extensive physical therapy. After completing physical therapy, Callie was cleared to return to competitive soccer in February of 2012. Callie credits Dr. Denton “…for doing an amazing job with my surgery.” She also added “Whenever someone asks which one is my “bad knee”, I say that I don’t have one!”

Callie plans on attending college after high school, and is in the process of deciding which college is right for her. PDOA is certain that Callie will be successful in her college studies!
